Art of Community

Come Join Us in Celebrating the Art of Community!

Sept. 21-23, Occidental, CA

On the Weekend of Sept. 21-23, the Art of Community, sponsored by the Fellowship of Intentional Community, is being hosted once again at the beautiful Westminster Woods Retreat Camp in Occidental, CA. Art of Community is a unique conference opportunity for people and organizations to share skills and knowledge about creating and living in intentional community, and to educate and network around the values and practices of living in cooperative culture. This year's theme is "People, Place, and Purpose", you can read more about it here.

We invite you to connect directly through interactive workshops, presentations, and activities and to learn about concepts of living "in communityâ" which demonstrate the ingredients essential for building community with intention wherever you live.

Our featured speaker this year is Mark Lakeman of Portland's City Repair Project. Mark will share his wisdom and stories about how City Repair strengthens a sense of community via projects which create more personal connections to "place".

FIC is a globally active nonprofit that has been promoting intentional communities and cooperative culture since 1987. We have a history of bringing people together in a vibrant exchange of information and inspiration.

Building a strong sense of community and cooperation intentionally wherever you are, whether it be within a professional environment, service organization, educational institution, neighborhood alliance, church group, corporate or non-profit atmosphere, intentional living situation... cooperation and a sense of connection to each other is essential for long term success and sustainability.

Participants will include members of many types of intentional communities, such as land-based communities, ecovillages, cohousing, urban co-op houses, and student co-ops, as well as community seekers, students, community organizers, and people interested in the basic principles of living more cooperatively.

Participants in AoC 2011 said:

  • "The opportunity to connect to such wonderful people, be in the bigger community of communities, to network, and get re-inspired was fabulous!!!"
  • "I felt connected to the movement, the people, and the spirit of community. I made great new friends and alliances. I learned. I taught. It was awesome!"
  • "I loved being surrounded by others who share my passion for community, and see community living as a step towards helping the world move in a positive direction."
