Cooperative Culture:
Synergy at the Edges
An exciting weekend of networking, learning, & fun!
Friday, May 30 to Sunday, June 1, 2008
University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM
Meals
Saturday night's banquet is included in the price of the ticket. For all other meals, plan to either bring a brown bag (and eat at the great duck pond on campus, or schmooze with fellow participants inside the Union building) or enjoy the great, ethnically diverse restaurants nearby. At the conference registration table, we will have a list of restaurants, including vegetarian and vegan options, within easy walking distance of the Student Union Building. This includes our local food coop, which is about a half mile East of the Student Union Building on Central Ave.
Where to Stay and How to Get Around
If you will have a vehicle: We recommend staying at the Rte. 66 hostel in the Old Town area a few miles from the University (which has a communal kitchen, the best rates in town and would be the best way to be able to hang out with others who are there for the conference). 1012 Central SW, (505) 247-1813 e-mail:Ctaylor939 - [at] - AOL.com Also, Albuquerque has most of the big chain places in town, and booking one of these near the airport will put you about a mile and half away.
If you won’t have a vehicle: Please know that the bus system in Albuquerque is mediocre; you can get to campus at the beginning of Friday and Saturday, but not back to wherever you are staying at night; Sunday will be easier. The closest hotels are both about a mile away from the conference site, both a straight shot east up Central. For the most part, it is a pleasant walk and is about a block past La Montanita Coop. The first is a non-descript, basic locally-owned cheap motel called the University Lodge, completely lacking in character (http://www.university-lodge.com/) The second makes up for that lack of character in spades: an Albuquerque institution, the Aztec has a goofy stuffed animal garden in the back and southwest kitsch galore glued to the side of all the buildings. If you want to stay there, make reservations ASAP as it fills fast. Aztec: 3821 Central Ave NE (505) 254-1742
Here’s a link for the parking information at UNM: See http://pats.unm.edu/maps.cfm for parking info. Parking is the one really tricky thing about us being at UNM, so please look this over if you are planning to drive to the site. Pior to 6:00 pm on Friday, you will have two options: use the Cornell Parking Structure, which will be $1.60 an hour or if you want to park in the A Lot before 6:00 on Friday you’ll need to get a permit to park here before 6:00 from the Parking Department at the NW corner of Central and University. After 6:00 pm Friday and throughout the weekend, we recommend parking in the A Lot (which is free at that point). As a general rule, open spaces have no extra signage; there are a lot of areas for reserved or permit-only parking, so look for those areas in the A Lot that don’t have this extra designation.
Public transportation information for Albuquerque: See http://www.cabq.gov/transit/ for bus system info. The last bus to the hotels recommended above leaves UNM at 10:15 which is before the official close of Friday and Saturday. For other parts of town, the bus service drops off considerably after 7pm, so it is best to not rely on bus service for all your travel needs in town. For specific route planning assistance, call (505) 243-7433. Albuquerque is, however, a bike friendly city, so consider that option.
Costs: Sliding scale $110-200.
