A retreat & conference center run by a worker-owned cooperative,
with natural hot springs, hydro power from the Breitenbush River,
and geothermal heat. The people who work here also live here,
in a small village that lies across the river from the retreat/conference
center. Three times each year they schedule a four-day community
renewal--when guest facilities are closed and the community joins
together for sharing. The worker-owners hold an annual meeting
at which they elect a board of directors. The board, in turn,
chooses a general manager who oversees the day-to-day operation
of the business, and who appoints team leaders to coordinate the
five areas of operations: kitchen, housekeeping, office, maintenance,
and marketing/publicity. Everyone else who works is a team member;
non-working spouses of workers are considered community members.
Breitenbush emphasizes being of service to its guests, hosting
thousands each year, and to stewarding the land. They are committed
to raising public consciousness about ecology issues, and are
deeply involved in trying to save the remaining temperate rain
forest in their area. They honor all spiritual traditions, and
are intentionally creating an energy self-reliant model for themselves
and the world
