('77, BC) 37 Members
A 9-unit cooperatively owned apartment complex located in the
university district in the city of Vancouver. They are interested
in, and working on/towards: alternate family groupings, community-scale
economics, meaningful employment, appropriate technology, consensus
decision-making, and collective social action. Projects initiated
by some of their members include a gourmet garnish and salad company,
a nonprofit that promotes organic agriculture and makes connections
between city folks and farmers, and another communal housing cooperative
in the neighborhood (which shares a similar vision of community).
The units are called "pods," and each pod determines the degree
to which it will be independent or communal; some are very tight-knit
and into family-style meals and resource sharing, while others
are very independent and informal. Fraser Common Farm, their sister
community [also featured in the video], is a tenth pod situated
on an organic farm one hour from town.
