A sister community to Community Alternatives, Fraser Common Farm
was established as a registered co-operative in 1977. It is a
10-acre organic farm located an hour's drive SE of Vancouver,
and is home to a collectively-owned salad & garnish business:
The Glorious Garnish and Seasonal Salad Company. Several resident
members are activists in the organic farming movement, and serve
as part-time staff for the nonprofit Farm Folk/City Folk organization.
The farm's primary goals are: 1) to provide recreational and educational
opportunities for the urban and resident members; 2) to do research
and experimentation in small-scale farming and appropriate technology;
3) to produce quality in-season food; and 4) to work towards economic
viability. They farm using the permaculture model, and now have
a flock of laying hens, bee hives, nut trees, fruit trees, raspberries,
several greenhouses, and a 3-acre market garden where they grow
a variety of plants, primarily edible flowers and other salad
garnishes.
