('93, CO) 42 Households
A large suburban cohousing community with 42 private homes and
three common buildings (common house, shop, greenhouse) located
at the center of the property, with parking at the edge (typical
of cohousing designs, to maintain a pedestrian village atmosphere).
Community values include honoring diversity, and living gently
on the earth--they're heavily involved in recycling, composting,
reduction of waste, and attempting to match landscaping choices
to the semi-arid climate in which they live (using drip irrigation,
xeriscaping techniques, and plants that thrive with little to
no water). Many of the households are families with children,
yet there is also a wide range of ages and social backgrounds
represented in the community. Nyland uses a consensus based decision
making process, and has developed a Sustainment Groups (SG) structure
for distribution of the work load. Each SG is responsible for
the sustainment or maintenance of facilities or projects, and
there is an expectation, largely a matter of self selection, that
each community member join one of the SGs. Each year, usually
in January, community members participate in a multi-step revisioning
process wherein they examine their goals and expectations, and
recommit to achieving those goals.
